October 20, 2026 at approximately 10:22 p.m., Deputy Adam Sherifi, from the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office (Texas), was assisting officers from the Canton Police Department in serving an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a police officer. They were attempting to do this at a residence in the 4300 block of State Highway 198 in Van Zandt County.
While attempting to perform their duties, shots were fired from the home and towards officers outside the residence and gunfire was exchanged. Unfortunately, Deputy Adam Sherifi was mortally wounded and died at the scene.
An officer with the Canton Police Department was also wounded and was transported to a local hospital. The suspect was later found deceased inside the home.
Deputy Sherifi leaves behind a wife and three children. Our prayers go out to his family both at home as well as with the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office.
