Detective Jeffrey Lee Smith - Cherokee Indian Police Department - North Carolina

On October 23, 2026, Detective Jeffery Lee Smith of the Cherokee Indian Police Department (North Carolina) was assisting a fellow officer with an arrest of a suspect. The suspect had fled on foot into a local river off of Highway 19 near Rocky Top Road in Cherokee, North Carolina.

Detective Smith and the other officer pulled the struggling suspect from the Oconaluftee River and up the riverbed when Detective Smith collapsed from a heart attack. He was immediately transported to Cherokee Indian Hospital, and despite life-saving measures, he passed away.

The suspect was arrested by responding officers and placed in custody.

Detective Smith had served with the Cherokee Indian Police Department for over 15 years and previously served with the National Park Service and the Swain County Sheriff's Office. Survivors include his daughter, father, longtime companion, the companion's daughter, and three grandchildren. He was 59-years-old. Our prayers and condolences go out to his family at home as well as with the Cherokee Indian Police Department.
