On October 8, 2026, firefighters from the Durham Fire Department (North Carolina) responded to a structure fire at 410 Marly Drive at approximately 3:15 a.m.
Fire crews arrived at approximately six minutes later and found heavy smoke and flames before entering the building. The structure was a commercial building but had been turned into a residence. At approximately 3:31 a.m., part of the building's roof collapsed bringing down the second floor and trapping multiple firefighters working the ground level. Firefighter Andrew Brokes was killed as a result of this collapse. Two other firefighters were injured and taken to Duke University Hospital.
Firefighter Andrew Brokes joined the Durham Fire Department on May 5, 2025 and served the Durham community with dedication, courage, and a deep commitment to the residents. Our prayers and condolences go out to Firefighter Brokes' family both at home as well as with the Durham Fire Department.
