
During a scheduled training exercise on September 16, 2026, K9 Cato of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office (Illinois) was injured and succumbed to her injuries.
On September 16, 2026, K9 Cato was participating in a training exercise at the Nauvoo Grade School. K9 Cato was accompanied by her handler, Deputy Milo Koechle. During the training exercise, K9 Cato sustained a fatal neck injury after striking a glass door.
K9 Cato was immediately transported to a veterinary hospital in Keokuk, Iowa, where emergency medical services were provided. Despite the efforts of veterinary staff, Cato ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
K9 Cato was a valued and beloved member of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office. Throughout her service, Cato played an important role in supporting their deputies and serving the citizens of Hancock County. Her dedication, loyalty, and service will not be forgotten.
