On June 17, 2026, at approximately 4 P.M., Trooper Sergio Romero of the Texas Department of Public Safety (Texas Highway Patrol), attempted to pull over a vehicle on US Highway 287 near Childress, Texas.
While attempting to conduct the traffic stop, a tractor-trailer pulled out in front of Trooper Romero's squad which caused a collision. Trooper Romero was died at the scene.
Trooper Romero had served with the Texas Department of Safety - Texas Highway Patrol for nine months and previously served with the Hill County Sheriff's Office. His survivors include his wife and two sons.
